Why New York Fashion Week Can Be a Good Opportunity for Entrepreneurs

  • Mandy Ansari was a child psychologist who pivoted to entrepreneurship through two side hustles.
  • Last year, she booked seven figures in revenue from her marketing agency and influencer work.
  • Ansari attended Fashion Week to help her business and shares how other entrepreneurs can do the same.

After her best friend died six years ago, Mandy Ansari launched a blog and social-media community where she could share her story, discuss mental health, and start meaningful conversations.

“My best friend lost her battle with lifelong depression and she took her own life,” Ansari told Insider. This loss inspired Ansari’s mission to create a digital platform for people seeking support and friendship.

At the time, she was working as a child psychologist and school principal while freelancing as a digital marketer, creating websites, logos, and branding campaigns for clients. But creating an online haven to communicate with other people, along with her marketing side hustle, became her main professional focus in 2018, she said.

Today, Ansari has turned her side hustles into full-time jobs. She continues to blog about mental health and life in New York City, is a self-proclaimed “virtual best friend forever” for anyone who needs support, and as a result of her successful freelance work, launched her own marketing agency, Modern Girl Media

Ansari has 400,000 followers across her personal Instagram and TikTok accounts and counts the Obama Foundation and dating app Bumble as former clients of Modern Girl Media. What’s more, she booked seven figures of revenue in 2021 through both her marketing agency and influencer work, according to documents verified by Insider. She sometimes finds herself working nearly 70-hour weeks to get it all done.

As a lifestyle-industry multi-hyphenate, Ansari participates in buzzy events like New York Fashion Week, where she attends shows and meets fellow creatives to grow her business, she said.

“You’re making an investment into your business,” Ansari said when referring to attending cultural events like Fashion Week. “The week includes so much relationship building, it’s about seeing if it’s mutually beneficial for you and those you’re connecting with.”

While Fashion Week can be consuming, Ansari is intentional about each event she attends to ensure it further connects her with followers, current clients, or potential customers.

Fashion wasn’t something that was natural to Ansari. In fact, she didn’t start creating fashion content until her audience asked for it. Finding a way to connect her work on mental health and career advice with fashion was a huge business opportunity for her brand.

Here’s how Ansari scheduled her day during Fall/Winter 2022 Fashion Week in New York City.
